Berlin: poor but sexy?

Yes, that is Berlin's current motto according to my tour guide today.  Berlin definitely looks poor, but I wouldn't say it looks very sexy (although my tour guide was).  The tour left from my hostel and featured the major historical landmarks of Berlin.  On the tour I met an American girl just starting out on her two-month Euro trip so I hung out with her.  Here are the highlights of the four-hour tour:
Largest Berlin church
This is where Hitler gave speeches
This is where a Hitler assassination attempt occured
War memorial
Humboldt University... looks a lot different than the one in California (Albert Einstein taught here)

Underground a memorial is built for the Nazi book burning; the room has shelves built
to house the ghost of every book

Checkpoint Charlie: step right up, pay 1 euro, and take a picture with  an "American soldier"

Cool street art

My awesome tour guide giving a history lesson. He is a singer in an electronic rock band!

A parking lot?  Yes, this is built on top of Hitler's bunker where he committed suicide

No, I didn't see Will Ferrell dressed as a Nazi... but every time I hear German I imagine Will from The Producers and I start laughing

I also went to the photography museum C/O Berlin and saw an exhibit on one of my favorite photographers, Robert Mapplethorpe.

At night I met an Icelandic dude from Couch Surfing... we walked to a cafe down the street and there, just by chance, we ran into about 50 other couch surfers having their weekly language conversation meet-up where they teach each other different languages!  The room was filled with people from all over the world.  I met one man who actually hosted a friend of mine from school!  The world is so little!

Just the typical ugly Berlin intersection
My awesome hostel: Circus
A typical building in Berlin is covered in... art?

  1. Try and see some of the beautiful areas outside of Berlin - you can take the subway to Wannsee and take a boatride which stops at the Pfaueninsel (peacock island) and you
can take a day trip to Postdam and see Sansouci - I did both and they were memorable. Near Wannsee is the Liebermann-Villa am Wannsee which offers an insight into the works of the impressionist painter Max Liebermann. There is also an amazing garden. Kristin's friend is a docent there.
